Sailor Mars Shows Her Life through Her Personality

A creation of Japanese writer Naoko Takeuchi, Sailor Mars appears in both the manga version and the anime version of the popular series Sailor Moon. She is both a young teen and a Shinto priestess. Her skills include numerous psychic abilities and the manipulation of both fire and heat.

Sailor Mars’ personality varies as she appears in both versions of the series. In the manga series, her personality conveys her father’s absence from her life. She is distrustful of men and views all men as being not worthy of her attention. Perhaps because her father, a powerful politician, only sees her once a year, Sailor Mars considers men to be weak-willed and shallow. When her friends attempt to engage in romantic relationships with boys, Sailor Mars tries to convince the other girls to shun men as she does. She has no use for men at all and does not appear to be interested in romance or marriage. Indeed, her personality is distant and sometimes cold, which impedes her ability to make friends or form close relationships with those around her. Her closest attachment is to her grandfather, a Shinto priest, and Usagi, a younger schoolgirl.

In the anime series, however, Sailor Mars appears to be a rather bubbly and typical teenager. She loves pop music. In fact, she often composes music for school events, as she plays both the guitar and the piano extremely well. She attends a Catholic school run by a convent, despite her being a Shinto preistess herself. Like her counterpart in the manga series, she remains bitter about her father’s absence. This bitterness can carry over to her friendships, as she is sometimes a rather shallow and untrustworthy friend. In fact, she is known for sometimes using harsh and snide words toward her friends. She has the psychic ability to understand animals and has spoken with squirrels who told her their names. She can handle and manipulate fire by crying out the words “Fire Soul!”.

Sailor Mars sports a costume that features a flaring red miniskirt paired with a white button down blouse. Her collar is secured by a red scarf that ties into a purple bow. She complements her outfit with a pair of elbow length white gloves that are trimmed at the top in red. Sailor Mars features long, black hair that has a hint of purple in it, especially at the top crown and roots. Around her forehead she wears a gold, V-shaped crown with a red ruby in its vortex.
